Rewriting the Narrative of Contemporary Classical Music — Composer DaeSeob Han
DaeSeob Han is a composer exploring new possibilities between contemporary classical music and popular sensibility, working primarily in music theater, contemporary music, and orchestral works. He studied at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar in Germany, where he won First Prize and the Audience Prize in the orchestral category of the Weimar International Composition Competition. He currently serves as Artistic Director of the Seoul Modern Ensemble and President of the Gyeonggi Contemporary Music Association.
His music layers diverse timbres, sensuous harmonies, and irregular rhythmic density to stir the listener's imagination. Not the density of notes, but the emotion between them. That's clear in his recent work. Jeongganbo, an opera selected as a "New Work of the Year" by the Arts Council Korea. Dal-saram (Moon Man), a vocalise opera where fragmented breath and humming turn the voice into percussion, while contemporary dance carries the story. Nero — Poppea's Love, an opera that mixes Baroque fluidity with contemporary timbres, built on voice and a piano trio alone. Formal precision, without hiding the feeling underneath.
